For as long as I can remember, the floating heads of lawyers Cellino and Barnes have presided over a curve in the I-190 on the south side of Buffalo (even during the dark days when Cellino disappeared for six months in 2005–apparently because of professional misconduct.) I always eagerly anticipated seeing this billboard on my way farther south, whether I was going to Columbus or elsewhere. On the way down to Columbus earlier this month, I noted that the billboard still held its traditional place of pride.
Turns out that not only is the firm a lot larger than I realized (with locations all over New York state and, until recently, even in California), the two attorneys who founded it are engaged in a vicious feud with each other. At stake, besides (I’m sure) the possession of their traditional billboards, is also rights to their 1-888-888-8888 phone number and their famous jingle, which apparently was the subject of a viral meme last summer with various celebrities posting versions. In late 2017 the two partners were in court spitting venom at each other, and an application has been made to dissolve the firm. The pair were due in court in late December 2018, but we don’t yet know what the outcome was.
Meanwhile, there is this.
