Today’s Daily Stoic writing prompt: How ready am I for unexpected attacks?
The way to stave off unexpected attacks is to expect them.
Continuing on my Montreal Olympics reminiscing, I ran across this NFB Canada documentary about the Games. It’s very interesting watching Jenner win the decathlon, something I remember well from those Games, and the personality that in many ways persists to the woman we know today as Caitlyn. But seeing some of the more obscure sports (modern pentathlon! Team handball! Team pursuit cycling!) is absolutely fascinating. These were the Games that made me an Olympic fan, and after all of these years, I can see why. There was still, at that point, little of the overt commercialization that has come to mar more recent Olympics. Ah, sweet nostalgia.
It’s also election night. I’m just remembering another election night last November, and the sense of tension verging on panic in the air. There’s none of that in Canada’s election. The sun will rise tomorrow, likely on a minority government of some sort, but this country will not rip apart at the seams. And the Rhinoceros Party will still stand for…something.
I’m putting the final touches on the material I’m presenting for Speechcraft tomorrow, so that’s it for tonight.
